what kind of wine is a good substitute for sauternes?

I would like tomake a Gumbo and it calls for Sauternes Wine what is a good substitutes

    Sauternes? Weird! Sounds too sweet for me.

    Definitely use sherry. It's fantastic in bisques and seafood soups. Do not get cooking sherry. Get a dry or medium dry one. Bottom shelf should be fine. I pay maybe $6-10 for the sherry I cook with.

    A dry unsweetened wine even a cooking sherry would do but cut down on salt as it is very salty and low in alcohol

    chardonnay would probably make for a good substitute for sauterne.
