Photoshop : Quick-Selection tool guide or a good alternative?

Look, I have a photo, this:

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/3033/o1r2.jpg

I try to crop the photo in this way that all the image EXCEPT the boy to get deleted, but I just can't.. It's very hard. And the low quality is not helping me at all... So, I tried the lassos, I just can't get them work like I want them to work. Any ideas of how to help me???? Any really good tutorials for beginners? I have Photoshop CS6.

With such a blurry image, you're going to have to use refined/feathered selections. I would also recommend that rather than deleting the background, you make a mask. This way, if you make a mistake, you can easily fix it without losing data. You also use masks to your advantage in that the selections can be refined further.

Just do a search for Photoshop Masking Tutorial or Photoshop Selection Tutorial (former preferable) and I'm sure you'll hit many good results.
