Did Wladyslaw Szpilman try to save Wilm Hosenfeld from the Soviet POW's concentration camp (The Pianist)?

Hosenfeld passed away in 1952 at the concentration camp and I'd like to know if Szpilman tried to save him after the War ended.

There were a number of Polish citizens who petitioned the Soviet government for Hosenfeld's release. According to Szpilman's son, he did try to get Hosenfeld released, but didn't succeed. The Szpilman family were instrumental in getting Hosenfeld recognised as Righteous.
