If you like museums, then stadsmuseumet is the best.
If you go in the summer, you will have plenty to do and see. Liseberg is an amusement park, on the smaller side, but nice and fun, live music some evenings. Slottskogen is a big park, it connects Majorna (an artsy, older part of town, fun to walk around in) with Linnegatan, that has lots of stores, cafes and some restaurants. You can walk through it, it also has a limited zoo, not much, but some animals that are common in the wilderness in Sweden and some other things that are worth seeing.
You can take the tram all the way to the ocean, there is a rocky beach, not much, but take one of the boats out to one of the islands there, they are great, very picturesque and there are some beaches on all of them. Brännö is beautiful and my favorite.
Universeum is also fun, especially if you are traveling with kids.
Haga is nice, also kind of artsy with unique stores and fun cafes.
There is so much, you will have a blast. Gothenburg is a summer city, with lots going on in the summer, the weather is very unpredictable but bring umbrella and walking shoes and you will love it.
Oh, and it is easy and pretty fast to get to Denmark, there are ferries that go to Frederikshavn, and tiny seaside village in Skagen, it is so pretty there and well worth a visit. You can go there in the morning and get back in the evening.
Lived in Gothenburg for 14 years, loved it, found new things to see and do all the time.
