The South Shore Line is the way to go. I went to Chicago from Portage in March this year, and a one way ticket is $7.25 and cheaper than parking. Trains leave about every hour from the Portage/Ogden Dunes station, you can board the train and pay the conductor once on board. I did not have any problems getting a parking spot at the Ogden Dunes parking lot, and it was free parking and safe and clean. The train will take you as far as Millenium Park downtown Chicago (also known as Grant Park) and has other Chicago stops prior to that point in case you are going to museums etc.
