I'm writing an essay and i have a sentence like this :

For days at a time the animals had nothing to eat but chaff and mangles (75).

where would i put in the quotation marks? like this? “For days at a time the animals had nothing to eat but chaff and mangles (75)." And do I put exclamation marks inside or outside the marks.

First, is this a direct quote from someone other than you? If so, you would use quotation marks AND credit the original author! If not, you have merely made a statement and quotation marks are not needed.

    e.g.

According to Doctor Smith, "For days at a time the animals had nothing to eat but chaff and mangles!"

    OR

For days at a time the animals had nothing to eat but chaff and mangles!

"For days at a time the animals had nothing to eat but chaff and mangles (75)." is correct.
