Gallaudet University was founded in Washington, D. C. (1856) by Amos Kendall and was headed by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (after whom it was named), who had established the first school for the deaf in Hartford, Conn. in 1815.Source(s): Stevens, Mark A.
