I think that website concept is clear.

A portal is a specific website that we can find in intranet or in extranet:

[intranet]: a gateway that unifies access to all enterprise information and applications.

[extranet/web]: a site that functions as a point of access to information on the Internet, like a Yahoo Portal.

From my understanding a portal is a login site for most websites like yahoo, facebook, twitter etc and a website is like that we're on now, simpler answer is portal is like a door and website is the room :)

Portal is where user input is required.

example irctc.co.in (inputs are required to proceed further)

Online shopping (particularly on buying things)

Websites are simply reading kind of thing.

    example: wikipedia
