There was a Marine special ops (MARSOC/MCSOCOM) test unit (DET1) that SOCOM deployed along with the SEALs in Afghan in 2005 to evaluate the idea of including the USMC into SOCOM (well after the USMC repeatedly denied wanting to have anything to do with SOCOM). While DET1's performance was remarkable, SOCOM disbanded them in 2006, and that was the end of that.
Generally speaking, SEALs are sent in to confront the enemy, Marine Recon (Force or Battalion) are sent in to conduct, you guessed it, reconnaissance (with the capacity to sustain confrontation). And since the USMC was not part of SOCOM in 2001, the USMC was the only branch that did not have special forces (or any forces) on the ground before the invasion of Afghan.
