The Jews agreed to a covenant where God set the laws for the nation. In turn, for obedience to those laws he assured his protection and blessing. When individuals broke those laws, the community was responsible for the carrying out of the judgment against them.
We have the example of Achan, who stole property from Jericho that was either to be destroyed or be turned over to the community. Because of his actions, God removed his protection in the next battle and dozens of men lost their lives. That thievery was exposed and Achan and his family were executed.
We see in another case in the Christian era when Ananias and his wife, who had been given the gift of the holy spirit, made claims to impress others, while in fact, were lying about the gift they gave. As Peter told Ananias, it was his choice to keep some of the money, but because he lied in order to brag about his gift, thus was lying to the spirit, he would die. His wife died too, since she was a party to the deception.
