I have an HP Pavilion g6 and it won't enter anything when I try the f8 key?

I have windows 8 and when I try turning my laptop on it says preparing automatic repair and and then goes to a black screen. I checked the disc drive and it passed the smart test but failed the extensive and short drive check. So I have two questions does f8 work and can you get on safe mode even if your hdd has failed or is failing? Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks!!

So you did not create the Windows 8 recovery disc set or the repair disc for your laptop !
