What is the difference between commensalism and synergism?

    Commensalism is when both parties exist equally together. Synergism is when both parties combined is better than the 2 individual parties are added together.

    For instance, if you are talking about bacteria, commensalism means that both bacteria can grow together the same as if they were growing by themselves. Synergistically, each bacteria produces something the other one needs, which makes it grow better than if it was by itself.
