How can you find old 401k acounts?

    There are no old 401k accounts.

    You're only eligible for a 401k while employed by your company.

    If you leave the company, for whatever reason, they cut you a check.

    You are meant to take that check and roll it over into an IRA or other tax deferred account, however, most people don't know any better and just deposit it in their bank account. Paying 10% penalty and ordinary income tax on the amount.

    Contact the employer that sponsored the 401(k) plan. If that employer was acquired by another company, contact the acquiring company. If the employer has gone out of business, you can search in the Department of Labor website mentioned in the webpage listed below for old 401(k) accounts.
