Squirrels chew on pine cones.....Why don't they get pitch all over themselves?
I have observed squirrels and chipmunks chewing on pine cones to obtain the seeds, but they never seem to be bothered by the sticky pitch that is always present around the pine cone. If I pick up a pine cone or even a piece of the tree I seem to instantly get the sticky pitch on me and it doesn't rub off too well. Seems like the poor squirrel would get stuck to the tree with all that pitch.

Although I don't know the reason specifically for this situation, there are a lot of examples that show that animals have certain protections from things like this. (For example, birds never seem to be affected by flying into thorn bushes, yet we don't know why)
