Is a registered nurse higher than a l&b nurse?

I want to be a registered nurse and a labor and delivery nurse,once your a nurse can you work in any department you want?if I become a nurse will I be qualified to work as an l&b nurse?

    As an RN you get a job for whatever area you wish. Getting hired is the problem. A L & D position is hard to find. Not much turnover. You might have to move, or wait 20-30 years. An RN or a L&D nurse are both entry level positions. You are aware, I hope, that the L&D nurse is working in an ICU situation. So it will help you to have this experience, that is, the ICU background, to make yourself more salable. A new baby or mother can get near death very, very fast.
