Is cannabis the same thing as marijuana?

I ask because the former is the UK name, the latter the US name and I wondered why the names have to differ, if they do indeed refer to the same thing. Tea is tea, coffee is coffee, beer is beer, rum is rum, tobacco is tobacco - so why the difference in the case of cannabis (or marijuana)?

Cannabis is the botanical name for the plant that Marijuana comes from. Marijuana is the female flowers of hashish sativa/indica dried up. Men and women call marijuana "cannabis" synonymously, however simply to be technical, hashish is the whole plant, whereas marijuana is solely the drug form of matured female vegetation.
