Did Nina Hagen or Gabriele Susanne Kerner write 99 red/air balloons?

I was researching and found that two people with the sam video clip and lyrics but different children and birth dates have sung this song, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me who actually wrote/sung it and also tell me who both of these people are and why I have found this information.

Thanks!

    ANSWERS:

The original song is titled "99 Luftballons" (luftballons literally translates to "Air Balloons" in English, and means regular party balloons). It was first recorded in German and released in Germany by the group "Nena." Nena, now a solo artist, was the lead singer of the group. Nena is also known as Nena Kerner. She was born: Gabriele Susanne Kerner.

The song's lyrics were written by Carlo Karges (deceased), Nena's lead guitarist; the music was written by Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, Nena's keyboard player.

The song was a big hit in Germany. A disc jockey at radio station KROQ in Los Angeles, CA, found a copy and started playing it. Response was positive; and the group "Nena" recorded an English version with the title translated as "99 Red Balloons". It became a hit in the USA, reaching #2 on the Pop Charts and staying in the top 100 for 23 weeks (late 1983 - May-June 1984). The English version is not a direct translation of the German lyrics. The English version was popular in Europe, and was #1 in the UK for three weeks in March, 1984.

The English-language version has been covered by others. Perhaps the best known cover was done by Goldfinger and was used on the soundtrack of the 2001 film "Not Another Teen Movie."

[NOTE: Nina Hagen is a German punk rocker, singer and actress; she started with the band "Automobil," and later (mid '70s) formed the Nina Hagen Band. She continues to record. She IS NOT Nena Kerner and she has NOT covered Nena's song in German or English. Please see:
