Python and Ruby are much better designed languages than PHP.

Python if you are an engineer.

Ruby if you are mostly interested in web development.

Perl is useful, but I would pick either Python or Ruby as a first language.

Python is fast and efficient, not to mention a pleasure to program in. With web frameworks like Django, Bottle, Flask, and others it's also really fast and easy to do web dev.

Go for PHP with MySQL... Its very easy to learn and its capable of making a powerful Enterprise application.

i would suggest you php, you can use mysql database to it! or try to find any version of visual studio from your friends, 2008 and 2010 preferably and try working with .net framework. asp.net with c# is my choice i use sql server 2008 for that! its really interesting!
