Online storage is storage accessible via a network.

Cloud Storage is a new type of online storage that utilizes cloud networking. In cloud networking several servers doing the same tasks are used to provide services to a large number of users. These servers maybe in the same physical location or there maybe large distances between them (1000s of miles). The data in the cloud is shared between the participating servers and stored in many locations. There are several advantages. If a server fails (or even the whole data center), its just out of the pool and traffic is directed to other servers. Data is backed up and readily accessible. Access is load balanced (if there are data centers on each coast, users on the west coast will use that data center, and vice versa).

    Hope this helps.

There really is not much of a difference between Online & Cloud storage. the only true diffrence would be Online storage you typically own/control/operate yourself. While Cloud storage is owned/controlled/operated by some one else that you don't know the infrastructure architecture, its "cloudy".

Back in My day... when you were drawing a network diagram you drew a cloud symbol for networks you didnt control or operate. for example.

    California Office network

    Router1

    ISP1

    CLOUD

    ISP2

    Router2

    NewYork Office network

you called it the colud because you didnt know the networks and connections between the two ISP that you bough your internet from.

This later came to be that your storage was in that same cloud of networks.

    California Office network

    Router-1

    ISP1

    CLOUD

    MyCloudStorage

    CLOUD

    ISP2

    Router-2

    NewYork Office network

so your Storage is *somewhere* in a cloud of computer networks. kinda like i you store your a a google Drive you have no idea where that data is stored on what computer in the vastness that is google.

Online storage however typically means you know where the server is that is storage your data that is not on site of your normal network.
