I = 1

V = 5

X = 10

L = 50

C = 100

D = 500

M = 1000

(with a simple line over the letter)

v = 5000

x = 10 000

It is possible to write 1-100...

I = 1

II = 2

III = 3

... but that would take too long. So follow these

IV = 4

IX = 9

XL = 40

XC = 90

CD = 400

CM = 900

499 = CDXCIX = (500 - 100) + (90 - 10) + (10 - 1)

Number behind the top number subtracts. Number in front of the top number adds, sometimes...

XV = 15

XX = 20

XL = 40

IXL= 49

LXXX = 80

XC = 90

XIXC = 99

C = 100

Hope this helps. You cannot write four roman numbers in a row. It's also very inconvenient to subtract by irrelevant numbers like LXXC = 30, when you can XXX = 30.

If you want to... 1337 = MCCCXXXVII. For a better look M-CCC-XXX-VII.
