The frequencies amplified to make speech easier to hear, mostly between 1 and 3Khz, are quite high, and one downside of wearing aids is that high-pitched noises. like cutlery and crockery banging together, can be painfully loud. Besides it takes most people some time to adjust to hearing aids. Aids can be uncomfortable, even painful, and they can itch. Many people never adjust, they lose their patience and take the the aid out.
If you want super hearing the best thing is to invest in a special amplifier for spies or bird-watchers. These have a special (gun or parabolic) microphone which focusses on a very small area and amplifies sound coming from that area. Or you can get cheap gun mics ( used) on Ebay, for use with camcorders, and plug them into a portable amplifier.
Am an aid wearer, having deafened myself listening to rock music.
