    Nara period (646 - 794 AD) --Nara

    Heian period (794 - 1185 AD) - You're right at Kyoto.

Kamakura period (1185 - 1392 AD) --Kyoto (the head of samurai load made a city for samurai at Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture)

Muromachi period (1392 - 1603 AD) --Kyoto (the head of samurai load made a city for samurai at Kyoto)

Edo period (1603 - 1868 AD) --Kyoto (the head of samurai load made a city for samurai at Edo, known as Tokyo today.)

The capital is where the Emperor is at.
