The smallest cogs (gears in back) are the hardest to pedal, and move the bike farther per pedal stroke, whereas the largest chainrings (front gears) are the hardest.

Smallest front and largest rear is easiest to pedal. Largest front and smallest rear is fastest but hardest to pedal. Everything else in between is a variation on the theme.
Use the gear that you can pedal easily.
