Please tell me what this quote means?
I dont understand the history of it, and i sincerely hope someone can explain what this quote is trying to say. Thanks in advance :)
The stars are dead. The animals will not look.We are left alone with our day, and the time is short, and history to the defeated may say Alas but cannot help nor pardon.
This quotes is by Wystan Hugh Arden's "Spain".

Nothing can be done about the losses in the past. There is no light to illuminate the past, not even the wild creatures will look at it, it is so terrible. No light, aloneness, not enough time--there may be regret but no help or pardon, what is done is done. Sounds pretty dismal!
