why is this so????????????????????????/?
in triangle abc, if median ad is drawn to side bc, then the two triangles formed are always equal in area. why are they always equal in area and not congruent or similar?

they would only be congruent if the triangle were equilateral or isosceles where side BC would be the base or dissimilar side. triangles ABDA and ACDA are always equal because 1/2 x b x h or the area of any triangle is exactly twice 1/2 x (0.5)b x h the area of either half.

The height stays constant, and the base is halved by definition of median.
