Stalin: Former student priest, presumably became acquainted with the fact that large masses of people will happily be fed BS and ask for more.

Kim's grandfather (d. 1994) is still ostensibly the current ruler of N. Korea, I do believe.

I think it's clear that an ostensible lack of belief in supernatural deities is not the defining factor of these Communist regimes (both of which can be considered faith-based in the religious sense).

The same reason Catholics tend to despise hitler, and Muslims tend to despise the Taliban. Disapproval of political atrocities transcends religious beliefs.

Both communism and the N. Korean government are absolutist states, They therefore have more in common with religion than anything secular. The fact that they both prevent OTHER religions by promoting atheism is not an indication of anything inherent about atheism.
