In the long run you will save money by not putting undue stress on the fuel pump.

I refer you to this question I answered a few days ago.

I give details why it is not good to run low on fuel.

if ya run it empty ya take a chance of sucking up any funk on the bottom of the tank into your fuel lines and injectors/carb. then ya have the expense of fixing all that. the money you save is by preventive maintenance, tune ups, easy driving, ect. adjust driving route and driving habits along with proper maintenance and youll see a big difference

Neither, You save on money by driving the vehicle relaxed and keeping it in low RPM's. Combining all trips into one journey also helps. Correct Tyre Pressure and Less Weight in the vehicle also helps.
