I think this is putting the cart before the horse. It was the fact that South Sudan had many tribes and religions, plus pressure on limited resources, including conflicts between pastoralists and settled agriculturalists for water supplies, and a renewed attempt by North Sudan to impose their rule on the South which led to war.

When a territory has no unifying identity and no dominant power to impose its rule then warfare can be one way by which disputes are resolved. It is not necessarily the only way. Mainland Tanzania has benefited from its great variety of peoples which have prevented the kind of tribalism which bedevils Kenya, for example.
