Somalia is one of the most important regions of Africa. It is strategically located on one of the most important sea lanes in the world. Billions of dollars of cargo pass by it each year. It also has several large sea ports that cater to the ocean traffic. Recently, it has become the newest front of the "war on terror". Jihadist groups attempting to take control of Somalia have made the US and several of its allies place significant military assets in the region. It is also currently bearing the brunt of an anti-piracy campaign. All in all, Somalia is not very stable or attractive, but its geographic location makes it vital.
