Is it a good idea to rent a car in France to drive around the south for a week?

My boyfriend and I live in Ile de France, but for Spring Break April27-May5, we were thinking of renting a car and driving around southern France since neither of us have been there.

Anyone have any ideas on what the costs would be, especially as far as gas prices? For lodging, we plan on camping (info on sites would be great!)

Also would loves suggestions on must-see places :)

Travelling around the French Riviera by car is a great idea but it's not cheap, verify the prices of different car rentals (Europcar, Avis, Hertz ...) and also, it's nice just to drive in the South of France but I wouldn't like to drive from Paris to Nice, it's too long and during Easter holidays, roads tend to be too busy.

I usually take the train to go to Sainte Maxime (near St Tropez), it's more expensive than taking a plane but more practical for me. Check the prices Paris Nice with Air France, if instead of flying on the 27th, you travel 2 days earlier, you may find a return ticket for 100€. Check also Easyjet. Book as soon as you decide because prices will soon rise.

See the website of the tourist office of each city or town you plan to visit, you'll find lots of useful information, including the campings or B&B.

If you don't rent a car, you can go from one town to the other by bus, it's very, very cheap, or sometimes by train. Bus companies are Lignes d'Azur and Varlib (see the links)

    My favourite places are :

    Saint Paul de Vence

    Eze Village and gardens

    Tourrettes sur Loup

    Villefranche sur Mer

Beaulieu sur Mer (the view from the road)

    Gorges du Verdon

    Grimaud

    Gassin

    Aix en Provence

    Porquerolles Island

Buy a couple of travel books like Guides Bleus Côté d'Azur or Guide du Routard (this one is good for practical information). You can find guides in English at WHSmith (rue de Rivoli, near Concorde square)

The south rim is interior the Grand Canyon nationwide Park. it fairly is completel secure, and the roads are all paved. it fairly is a lengthychronic to end a around holiday in one day. The south rim is the main senic area of the Grand Canyon. it will be crowded on July 4th. If this is your in common terms possibility to work out the canyon then decide for it. I recommend which you intend a visit to the Grand Canyon and stay some days at between the motels interior the park. Make your reservation nicely in improve. Hike the paths and absorb all that the park has to grant. Vegas might nicely be a short quit on your way in or out.

Renting a car is a great idea in France since Taxis are fairly expensive
