Generally speaking, subatomic particles are particles smaller than an atom. There are the three basic ones that make up atoms, and you probably already know that those are protons, neutrons and electrons.
If we delve more deeply into the physics of the subatomic world, more and more particles will appear. At one point, there were literally dozens and dozens of different subatomic particles, and they created what was called a particle zoo. Since then, some newer ideas regarding the world of these tiny particles has arisen, and most of the particles in the zoo were recognized as composite particles made up of a just a few fundamental particles.
Begin learning about subatomic particles by developing an understanding of protons, neutrons and electrons. Then find out what makes them up, and move from there to the number and nature of fundamental particles. :) :)

subatomic particles are the smallest particles in the universe, they are what actually make up atoms (the building blocks of matter) because they are what make up atoms, they are called sub-atomic. some of the larger subatomic particles are protons neutrons and electrons . subatomic particles are responsible for giving atoms there charge, electrons being negative give the atom a negative charge, protons being positive give a positive one, usually atoms have no charge because they have the same number of electrons as protons, but in isotopes, atoms may have more or less protons or electrons resulting in a charged atom. the atom is over 99% empty space, and its mass comes from the protons and neutronms at the center of the atom in whats called the nucleus, electrons are much much smaller than protons and neuttrons and orbit at speeds approaching the speed of light in what is called the electron cloud, on the periodic table the atomic number tells you how many protons (and how many electrons because they are usually the same amount) an atom has. neutrons have no charge but give the atom mass, and serve a few other purposes i wont go into. however electrons neutrons and protons are not the only subatomic particles, one that is newly discovered is called the higgs boson, although protons and neutrons are big and have mass, we never knew exactly what is mass, and where does it come from, the answer is the higgs boson, which gives particles mass and the ability to bend space time however slightly, which causes gravity, stars having more mass and therefore more higgs bosons, bend space time a lot and have a lot of gravity, whereas one hydrogen atom having only one proton neutron and electron (its atomic number is one) has virtually no mass, and therefore very little gravity. some other subatomic particles are neutrinos and quarks, this was a very basic explanation, but for more info go to
