Why does israel keep its nuclear weapons a secret?

I just want to know why Israel keeps its nuclear power program a secret and why it denies having nuclear weapons even tough it has been proved the contrary.

Israel is America's base of operations in that part of the world. America effectively controls the "news" that we all hear. Think about it: Israel is perfect; a divided population, a long shoreline and is bang in the middle! Strategically, the best ally possible. So why would the US allow the media to tell humanity anything truthful about Israel?
