1 Up till then, these problems had been___for centuries

    1 laying dormant (lay是及物動詞,必須有受詞,不能直接連上形容詞dormant)

    2 lying dormant(lie是不及物動詞,可以接形容詞dormant當主詞補語,故本選項正確)

2John Joseph Pershing__ in1919, the first highest rank held by any American citizen except George Washington

    1 made a full general(made可做主要動詞,且意義合理,故為正確選項)

    2 to be a full general(不定詞to be不能當主要動詞)

    John Joseph Pershing

He will make an excellent scholar.

    Fir makes good building material.

    XXX made a full general.

    a full professor = 正教授

    a full member = 正式會員

He will make an excellent scholar.

Even though "made a full general" is acceptable, but it can be treated as "SELF made". Therefore, in my opinion, this sentence is better to use passive voice by using "was made a full general". After all, he WAS GIVEN such a title BY someone.
