I drive a BMW118D, im looking for wintertires (205 instead of 195)?

im looking at second hand tires. but i cant seem to make sense of the measurements. my car currently has a 195/55/r16 tire under it. but they seem to be hard to find. can i use a 205/55/r16 instead on my bmw 118D?

    You could, but your traction won't be as good. The extra 10mm width will create less pounds per square inch of pressure of surface contact, lowering the friction.

    There are plenty of new snow tires that size at tirerack.com.

    If you aren't going to use winter tires, you are wasting your money. I would guess you are buying extra wheels as well?

    You never want to go wider with a winter tire. I am sure your theory of going with the 205 wider width tire will give you better traction. Not true. A wider tire will actually give you less traction. A wider tire literally has to plow away more ice and snow. This added resistance with hinder your traction. Here are the full detail on why:
