It was part of a prayer of Hannah (Samuel's mother). She was one of two wives of Elkanah. She was barren, but the other wife was able to have children and rubbed Hannah's nose in it every chance she got. (GNB) Stop your loud boasting; silence your proud words. For the LORD is a God who knows, and he judges all that people do. While this trial of Hannah with Peninnah was the basis of these remarks, we can all take a lesson from it. The nation is Israel thought themselves something special because they had God's favor. Instead they should have been humbled that He would choose them. Same with the Christian. We are nothing special, there are plenty of people who are better than us, so before we go and get all high and mighty and think we are God's gift to the planet, we should be humble and realize we are His servants, and ambassadors. For some people the only thing they will know about Christianity is us, so instead of a Nanananah attitude, we need to take our responsibility very seriously. To whom much is given, much is required. Many who say Lord Lord, may get a "I never knew you!" Take heed, that just as the nation of Israel was taken out of the vine and we were grafted in, we can be taken out just as easy. God knows what we are doing, and we better not get carried away with nonsense and thumbing our noses down at other people. Myself included.
