It's nerves, anxiousness, pressure, desperation, and goose bumps lol.
Reflex erection of hairs of the skin in response to emotional stress! It happens in biggest stages and situations! Currently SA and SL are the two most weakest teams of handling such enormous pressure situations! Have to say that. Both getting choked big time!
Yes you made a pretty good point. I mean all we gamers have to do is sit on our butts and keep pressing the buttons. So then even if we are getting choked while playing finals in cricket video games why not real cricketers who play the real cricket carrying the hopes and expectations of millions!?
I even get goose bumps when I watch matches on TV! So I always wonder "hmm if I feel this much nerves while sitting back at home relaxed, how much would the cricketers feel on the ground?"
- - - - - So these cricket games always teach us about the reality and how much we should respect those real cricketers! It's easy to be arm chair experts but the players who are in the middle of the ground know how tough it is.--------
Like you I also have choked in finals, must win games. So far I've played the world cup about 10 times against the CPU opponent(who is as intelligent as human) in ICC 2002 game and I've only managed to win 4 or 5 times. On many occasions I came to the final being undefeated and lost in the finals because I was too over cautious, nerves and desperate!
See this where I played as SL in 2003 WC.
(1) SL 298/8(50) NZ 143(29:4) WON
(2) SL 324/2(50) BAN 172(32:3) WON
(3) SL 254/9(50) CAN 98(21:5) WON
(4) KEN 160/9(50) SL 161/1(17) WON
(5) WI 251/3(50) SL 253/4(48:5) WON
(6) SL 371/6(50) SA 183(32:1) WON
(1) SL 287/6(50) PAK 195(40:3) WON
(2) IND 188/9(50) SL 191/4(43:5) WON
(3) SL 373/4(50) ENG 244(34:5) WON
PAK 234/7(50) SL 235/4(47:3) WON
Won all the games with ease. None were even close to lose. Final would be SL vs India whom I defeated easily at super sixes.
India won the toss and batted. And just scored 229/8(50) having Dravid making 79.
Seemed like an easy task as I had my top order in the form of their lives. Here were their averages of the series before the final.
Then the typical choking started! I lost 2 for 15 and right in the next delivery Aravinda got run out for a duck making it 15 for 3! I used a sheer defensive approach but couldn't stop the flurry of wickets. It was 36 for 5 in the 15th over when Samaweera joined the Indian nightmare Jayasuriya who was seeing everything from the other end! See the collapse of informed players!
Sanath and Thilan made a pretty good recovery but I was falling behind the required rate! Samaraweera's wicket was taken by Nehra making SL 137/6 in the 38th over!
Jayasuriya tried his best joined by the tailenders but to no avail. He got out as the 8th wicket on 186 in the 46th over after making a fighting 105 off 127 balls!
SL finally clashed for 196 with 8 balls to spare! India won the world cup! Nehra took 5 for 20 of 9 and was the obvious choice for the MoM award.
IND 229/8 SL 196
No doubt that i was choked by the pressure like you. I was afraid and nerves to attack in the first 10-15 overs in the final after doing it successfully in the entire tournament! Had i did it would have been a different story who knows!
Choked big time...
