Everyone always wants to know what the best free is instead of which one works the best out of all. Simply put, As I have said a million times, No such thing as a best free anything. Especially anti virus. Like with most other things in this world, You get what you pay for.

But, I will answer your question. You may not be able to afford paid. If you can't, If it were me, I would go with Avast. MSE just isn't that good. MSE just lets to much get by that it really shouldn't. But, Don't expect great works from Avast alone. It has it's faults to. Trojan Mal ware and drive by downloads. Avast has real time protection. But, It's not good enough. If I were going to use it, It would be with the paid version of Mal ware bytes. Mal ware bytes paid version has real time protection. The free version doesn't. The paid version will enhance Avast free version making it harder to break through. Use the Comodo fire wall or if you have Windows 7 or Vista, Use the firewall that came with the running system. It's just as good as any free one. With XP, Use Comodo fire wall.

    • Totally agreed what is free and what is not free I mean there is TORRENT f*ck's sake, people are so damn stupid..

I ha/ve Windows 7 Home Premium and MSE has been great, simple and reliable. AVG was a nightmare. Avast is not bad but as mentioned by another on here, who needs the pressure of upgrading and paying when I get good protection for free?

Microsoft Security Essentials recently lost its AV-TEST antivirus certification, due to a poor performance. In the latest tests, it's still doing badly (see the fourth link). AV-TEST are a highly respected independent tester of antivirus products:

    Try this:

I have the free versions of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) and Avast Antivirus installed. They won’t conflict, so long as you don’t attempt to scan with both products simultaneously.

As soon as you've installed them, start them and get updates for the virus definitions.

Here’s a link to the free version of Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware:

Here’s a link to the free version of Avast Antivirus:

    Hi,

Its better to refer AV-Test.org to compare these products, they have more than 25 years of experience in Security product testing and they periodically updates their test reports according to the new product versions released.

Also reffer www.av-comparatives.org/ they too are good at it.

My personal recommendation from your choices is "Avast"

And if you look for maximum security, then it's better change the Product that you are using Periodically.

Because no Security product can identify all the threats that are present today...

Source(s): You can refer the test reports at http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/ reffer www.av-comparatives.org/ too
