I have a problem on my assignment right now. My one problematic sentence is

"Aparecí que a Andrew era mi primo primero."

So if I roughly translate it literally, it would say "it seemed to me that Andrew used to be my first cousin" in the imperfect. In the preterite, it would be "it seemed to me that Andrew was my first cousin" if I exchanged "era" with "fue".

But keep this in mind: my cousin is LIVING so wouldn't it be "Aparecí que a Andrew es mi primo primero."

But my whole essay is (supposed to be) in the preterite/ imperfect tense.

Help please?
