I am very interesting in the HIV-related issues, and I describe HIV-1 in simple.

HIV-1 was isolated different genetic subtypes. Phylogenetic analyses of HIV-1 were subsequently classified into three groups: M(main); O(outlier); and N( non-M and non-O). The vast major of HIV-1 strains categorize group M, which consists of least nine genetic subtypes (A, B, C, D, F, G H, J, and K) , fifteen circulating recombinant forms and five unique recombinant forms. Globally, the most prevalent HIV-1 genotypes are subtypes C (47%), A (27.2%), B (12.3%), D (5.3%) and CRF01_AE (3.2%). Previous study showed that subtypes B is predominant in homosexual males, CRF01_AE is predominant in heterosexual persons, and CRF07_BC is predominant in intravenous drug user in Taiwan. HIV-1 genetic variability and recombination impacts on developing an efficacious vaccine.

The United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimated about 34 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the world at the end of 2011. Sub-Saharan Africa most severely affected, with nearly 1 in 20 adults living with HIV and accounting for 69% of the people living with HIV worldwide. In Taiwan, 24,056 people infected with HIV-1 had reported to the Centers for Disease Control in November 2012. Before 2003, the number of people newly infected with HIV-1 increased about 10% every year. Since 2004, an explosive epidemic of HIV-1 among injecting drug users resulted in that the number of people living with HIV-1/AIDS in Taiwan has suddenly elevated from an 11% increase in 2003 to a 77% increase in 2004 and a 123% increase in 200520. After the implementation of a harm reduction programme, a 10% decrease was seen in 2006. The proportion of intravenous drug users infected with HIV-1 increased from 1•7% (13/772) in 2002, to 8•1% (70/862) in 2003, to 41•3% (628/1520) in 2004, to 72•4% (2461/3399) in 2005, and dropped to 68•6% (2017/2974) in 2006.
