Steam is a digital retail plantform launched in the early 2000s, it's managed and owned by VALVe, a game company.
In Steam, you can purchase games with minimum DRM and always have them bound to your account. No limited installs, no bullcrap. You just buy your game, click the install button, and it's yours as long as you have your account.
Steam also runs a friends network, where you can add friends, chat, invite them to play games, trade games or coupons, items from games, etc..
Steam also automatically updates your games, it's super easy and can be turned off. Steam also has the Steam Cloud, which tracks your saved data across machines, so you can continue your Skyrim playthrough while at your Aunts or something.
To purchase ARMA 2 and DayZ, install Steam and register an account. Setup your profile if you want, and head to the store. Search, "ARMA 2", and find ARMA 2: COMBINED OPERATIONS. Purchase this game, and let them install. Steam handles this for you.
Once they are both finished installing, run them in this order.
ARMA 2: OPERATION ARROWHEAD
Go into the Expansions menu in ARMA 2: OPERATION ARROWHEAD and make sure ARMA 2 is checked as one. You got your ARMA 2 ready for DayZ.
Head over to the DayZ website, and use the Six Launcher/Updater, this will download and install it for you. Also updates it for you. From the Six Launcher, you can find servers automatically, just double click one you think sounds good, and have fun with DayZ.
Hope I helped.
