If you have the option of sentencing someone to the electric chair or inducing totalamnesia, which would you decide? Is total amnesia more humane? Would it truly erase all memories? These are the questions that will swirl around the person who invents the first total amnesia inducer.

Much like formatting the hard drive of a computer, the amnesia inducer will erase all memories in the human brain. People going through this process will have to start from ground zero, relearning how to eat, walk, talk, read, and write all over

again. But it will still be portrayed as a more humane ( 38) to the death penalty.

Partial amnesia inducers, which erase only the past few days of someone’s memory, will have application in erasing the lasting memory of a person traumatized by such things as a brutal crime, the ravages of war, or child abuse.

38 A. dejection B. solution C. inspiration D. attraction

Update 2:

As we all know, electric chair is a method of death penalty. In this article, it brought up another method as an alternative and more humane way. It refers as a method, therefore, it is logical to use "solution" in the context. We can easily eliminate choice (A) and (D), because they don't fit the context. "inspiration" only refers to an "idea" rising from something or someone, hence, it is NOT a good choice.
