Amtrak is a portmonteau combination of the two words American and Track. It is the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, founded in 1971 to provide intercity passenger trains in the united states. It is partially subsidized by the federal government and certain state governments including Pennsylvania, Vermont, and California.

Kevy gave you an outstanding answer. I'll simply add (if anyone's interested), that the original service name for the National Railroad Passenger Corporation was RailPax, but that was quickly dropped in favor of Amtrak.

Kevy nailed it. Interesting name to say the least. The full name I get, but Amtrak is a very different name. Its a fine name though, I like it.
