Is my dad right about this?
My dad says that you can't keep up with everything; the only thing you can keep up with is food and books. Is he right about this?

No
Food is a personal thing. Appropriately enough, you can eat what you like - but if you want the very latest fad-food cooked by the latest fad-chef, you're gonna have to pay for it.
Books? There are still thousands of books published in a week, covering all subjects including fiction. Either you devote your life to becoming the fastest reader on the planet, or you accept that you can only read the authors you like and trust in your lifespan.
Now... the things you SHOULD keep up with are the things that are important to you - family and friends (best effort maybe?); taxes and commissions (or you go to jail and develop a bad reputation) and correspondence.
This isn't an exhaustive list - you REALLY only keep up with things that are important to you and that you value for yourself. By being constant and true to these things - they help to define you as a person. You'll figure it out in time.
Of course - the other option is to chase every possible fad and fashion - and catch none of them. There are people who identifiably do this - but they are chasing dreams that come to nothing.
Ask your dad what is important in his life - that will give you a clue.
