Well the stock of you want I would go with a good type of gravel only because you can see debris in the bottom of the tank with white sand. If you like sand I would suggest getting some good bottom feeders like the cory cats because they sift through the sand well and you hardley see a mess. I had sand in my 55 gallon but i know have a live planted tank and I use Flourite. I love the way it looks and its great for live plants but since you are using fake I would go with a natural looking gravel even though personally I don't like it. Also the types of fish you want love live plants and driftwood... I have a tank of platnium pearlskin veil angels and german blue angels that love live plants...Source(s): many tanks along with many fish....

I always prefer sad, just because of the more natural look, for me i feel like its easier to clean, easier to plant plants in, i just love it ! My opinion.

Something that is between sand and gravel. Petco brand of Aquarium Sand. I have it in all of my tanks. It works great with plants, catfish barbels, loaches, vacuums great, doesn't really get that dirty and I could go on and on.Source(s): experienced 50+yrs
