How strong are accents in Italy?

For example in England a Geordie (north east) accent is both strong and recognizable as well as other accents like Mancunian/Scouse etc etc Is it the same in Italy? For example is it easy to tell if someone is from Udine in Italy's North East from a Rome or Milan perspective??
