According to the FBI's website, applicants must have at least 3 years of tactical experience in either law enforcement or the military.
Law Enforcement Experience:
*With a Federal Agency tactical team (This category includes all Military Police.).
*Or with a Local/County/State Agency or Department tactical team.
- Full-time tactical team experience will carry more weight than part-time experience.
- Completion of continuing education courses in at least three of the following: Basic SWAT • Advanced SWAT • Hostage Rescue • High Risk Arrest • Barricaded Subject • Basic Sniper/Observer • Advanced Sniper/Observer • Tactical Firearms • Mechanical Breaching
Military Experience – Army
Combat Arms experience. Service in Special Forces Group or Ranger Regiment will carry more weight.
Military Experience – Navy
Must have served in the Naval Special Warfare Community as a SEAL or Naval Special Warfare Officer.
Military Experience – Marine Corps
Combat Arms experience.
Military Experience – Air Force
Must have served in Combat Controller, Combat Rescue (Pararescue), or Tactical Air Control Party fields.
HRT Operators are Special Agents first. Visit the FBI's website. Becoming an FBI Special Agent is a very competitive process. The vast majority of people that apply to become Special Agents don't get to. Becoming an HRT Operator is even more competitive. You need at least a 4 year college degree to become a Special Agent. Get the highest grade point average that you can, participate in a couple extracurricular activities, get a good internship, do some regular volunteer work, don't do anything illegal, and maintain a good reputation. Consider getting an advanced degree. Getting law enforcement officer jobs is becoming more and more competitive. Do whatever you can to make yourself the best candidate that you can. For example, don't do anything illegal, maintain a good reputation, keep a good driving record, don't get bad credit, improve all of your communication skills as much as possible, practice to improve your observation and memory skills, and become as physically fit as you can.
