Help with a chemistry problem?
You have been given a sample of an unknown
substance. You find out that it does not
dissolve in water, has a very high melting
point and conducts electricity when molten.
The substance is probably
1. sodium chloride.
2. a covalent compound
4. an ionic compound.

I would have to say 3 is the correct answer. It is octane and that does not dissolve in water. Octane is a non-polar molecule and only polar molecules dissolve in water.Source(s): college chemistry student
