I'll bet you loose internet when you unplug the computer too! You can't unplug the internet, which goes from your modem to the router to your computer, and expect to get it to work.

Your router assigns your ip addresses and is responsible for forwarding all your packets to/from the internet. If you remove the router(as you demonstrated), you lose your connectivity.

a router is responsible for sending packets from your machine onto the internet, if you are not connected to your router then there is no way for you to access the internet.
