Each was predatory on the other's settlements. Disputes arose over land, gold and buffalo.

White settlers wanted the land for themselves.

Native Americans resisted, and were forcibly removed or exterminated as a result.

lack of information, for a quick answer. an prolonged answer is composed of religious and cultural transformations. From an anthropological attitude, the invading white settlers did no longer comprehend the subculture of the Plains Indians, and that they opted to break or replace it every time available, with what they believed grew to become into an exceptional way of life. "Savage" via definition skill "uncivilized."

Land, mostly. White settlers wanted more & more, Indians were pretty damn tired of their shrinking territories.
