Progressed planets move slowly. Unless Jupiter, Saturn, and the three outers are close to an angle or perfecting an aspect at birth, they will rarely tell you anything. Since progressions are slow they are associated with development, not immediacy. The will coincide with events at some point but events don't pop out of the sky very often. They are usually the results of previous actions.
Transits, in my opinion, are way, way overrated as predictors. When they coincide with a hit using progressions (or primary directions or solar arc directions) things will happen, and perhaps seem to occur out of the blue, but that isn't the case. For example: you're born, dear sweet and wealthy uncle Louie falls in love with your cute face and decides to include you in his will. He doesn't tell you, or maybe he does. Then the ruler of the 2nd progresses to a nice trine with Jupiter when you're 22.. About that time old Louie dies and you inherit the money. Now if all the gears mesh, very close to the time of Louie's death or the time you are notified of the money a transit occurs, say ruler of the 6th (aunts uncles) is conjunct your ASC. Now the ruler of the 6th might be a fast moving planets, say Venus, and conjuncts the ASC each year. You don't inherit money each year, but rather it is the combination of the two, the timing of the progression combined with the transit, that reveals the event.
My first astrology teacher told all of us, "Transits are not enough." Robert Hand probably the foremost astrologer in the USA wondered about transits being used by themselves on more than one occasion. He realized that seemingly major transits occurred without any indication at all. Why? One answer is that they require more than the transit itself.
If you are adventurous and wish to do some work, try progressing through the bounds (aka "terms). The bounds are an uneven division of each sign and the planets (not including the Sun and Moon) rule particular divisions. There are a few versions, but the differences are minimal in most cases. I prefer the Egyptian bounds. As the planet is progressed through the zodiac, at various times in the life it will move from the bounds of one planet to the bounds of another. Things tend to happen at that time. For example on Nov 22, 1963, JFK's ASC had moved to 24 Scorpio 06. This moved the progressed ASC from the bounds of Jupiter (exaltation ruler of his MC) to the bounds of Saturn (ruler of his 4th house of endings). By itself this is NOT enough to predict death, much less murder. But it is a red flag and an indication the astrologer should look deeper.
